Hi folks, I'm sending a long overdue update on the Zine Subject Thesaurus, and I'm sorry to say that the update is that not much has been happening since I was last in touch. But I want to get things moving again, starting with this message. Back in May I left my full-time job and had a lot of energy and thought I had a lot of time to work on the Thesaurus and create an administrative structure for it, apply for grants, etc. However, in June I got an unexpected tax bill and suddenly had to find paid work ASAP, so for the last 6 months I've been focused on that. I think I also set goals for the Thesaurus at that time that were too big and ambitious and then I felt overwhelmed by how to tackle everything in the time I had. I do have somte time to work on the Thesaurus and I want to approach things now in a more realistic and collective way, working away on things together as we can, within our capacity. I think the best next step is to form a Zine Thesaurus Management Collective and start having regular meetings and editathons to continue updating the Thesaurus, establish policies and procedures, prioritize feature improvements to the platform, etc. The Collective will probably look a lot like the group that has been updating the Thesaurus over the last few years but I'd like to form it in a more official way and invite broader participation from anyone who is interested. I made a draft Terms of Reference for the Management Collective <https://docs.google.com/document/d/10zbpGvynUdacm8puVWPkHNzvnClMmghfCfslC8hOES0/edit> and I was wondering if you could all take a look at it and let me know what you think in the next couple of weeks? Do you agree with the scope and responsibilities? Is anything missing or unclear? Comments are welcome by email to this list or on the doc. After we have finalized the Terms of Reference, we can invite expressions of interest from zinesters, librarians, archivists and other folks who are interested in joining. Then we can meet and start doing some fun editing and planning work! Please also let me know if there are any other high-priority things to do with the Thesaurus that should happen ASAP. I apologize for having dropped the ball on creating the thesaurus maintenance guidelines—without regular meetings, it's too easy to let things fall off my plate. With the new MARC code, I think this is a great time to put together a webinar to share information about the thesaurus with the wider library world. I'm thinking here about how Homosaurus has held multiple sessions in the past year to talk about its structure and updates (see, for example, Cataloging with the Homosaurus: Who, What, When, Why, & How <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhdijsT0yVM>). We don't have to have the leadership structure in place to share the word, and it could be a good way to drum up interest in the management collective/editing sessions as well. Would that be something people would be interested in putting together? Amanda, do you think this is the right time to start planning that? Hi Violet, Thanks, a webinar is a good idea! I still wonder if it would be better to form the Management Collective first and have organizing the webinar be one of our first projects, because we will have to meet as a group to plan the webinar anyway and get a sense of where the Thesaurus is currently at, since we haven't met for awhile. And I expect after we meet and start planning we may decide we want to have a few more things in place before we do the webinar (which we could work on simultaneously). What do you think? Hi all, I hope everyone had a nice break! I'm sending you one last request for feedback on the Zine Thesaurus Management Collective's Terms of Reference <https://docs.google.com/document/d/10zbpGvynUdacm8puVWPkHNzvnClMmghfCfslC8hOES0/edit>, in case anyone has final thoughts before we start distributing it. So please add or send feedback by January 11 and then I'll finalize it and we can start sending out invitations to participate in the Collective on January 15. I made a few suggested edits after reading it through again. I started making a list of places we can send out the call for participation in this doc <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1z5STJYr_nU2tFaQiTTXELF151nuDmMmpaynxHRBNbnM/edit?pli=1#heading=h.1na5mc6qrpro> - I haven't thought of very many yet. Please add other places and sign up for any that you want to send the call to, like listservs, Discords, Facebook groups, etc. You're also welcome to send it to specific people, tweet it, etc. when it's ready. I also wrote a draft message <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1z5STJYr_nU2tFaQiTTXELF151nuDmMmpaynxHRBNbnM/edit?pli=1> we can send with the call for participation, which of course you can personalize and modify, but I thought it would helpful to have something to start with. Do you have any ideas for making the message more interesting, inviting, or clear? Please suggest any changes on the doc. I had a great meeting with Janaya Kizzie from the Homosaurus Editorial Board a couple weeks ago. I reached out because I wanted to know more about how the Homosaurus project operates and they gave me a lot of helpful information. We also talked about ways we can collaborate.
