Hi all, I am currently spearheading the creation of a zine collection at SUNY Buffalo State University's library. I am planning to teach with the collection and will provide students with the opportunity to contribute their zines to the collection. I am busy reading all of the articles/chapters/zines/etc. that I can find that talk about building a new zine library and/or teaching with zines. I wanted to introduce myself here in case anyone has suggestions or advice to offer. As a side note, one of my first publications was in a zine (Ladyfriend, by Christa Donner) back in 2000/2001ish. This past year, I finally created my own zine, a collection of "Earthseed" verses from Octavia Butler's Parable books. (I have a digital copy I'd be happy to share with anyone who wants one.) I'm excited to have found you all. I look forward to attending ZLuC later this year. Hi Julie, That so great about starting a zine collection at Buff State! I bet you'll get more responses once you have some specific questions. In the meantime, when I proposed the zine library at Barnard, I broke my thinking down into these areas: - collection development policy - cataloging - shelving - access - preservation - budget Knowing what I know now, I might have added instruction and been more explicit about serving researchers. And ethics! If you haven't read the Zine Librarians Code of Ethics <https://www.zinelibraries.info/code-of-ethics/> yet, that's a great place to start. Your Octavia Butler zine sounds nerdtastic! One thing you can do, re: ZLuC is propose an interest group session for academic librarians. You could even request an academic librarians panel, and we (the programming group) could possibly put one together for you.
