Hi All,
We (coordinators: Gina, Lauren, and me) want to check in about something we
weren't comfortable answering for the group. Our planned photography policy
is that we'll have lanyards for people to indicate their comfort with
having their picture taken:
smiley face print - photos okay
rainbow print - ask first
paw print - no photos
There will be an expectation that people won't always be able to be exempt
from group / overview shots. Folks who don't want to be recognized might
further cover their face or wear make-up
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/07/makeup/374929/.
Remember--we'll
pretty much all be wearing KN95 masks anyway.
If that policy isn't agreeable, please discuss. But here's the question
that prompted this email: *NYU's events team wants to document ZLuC. They
will adhere to our policy. What do y'all think? Okay for an NYU
photographer to take pictures? *
We'd love you to reply all so this can be a group conversation, but you're
also welcome to share your feedback privately.

I am alright with being photographed generally and I also think the
lanyards are a really excellent idea. I think if NYU promises to agree to
the lanyard policy and perhaps if they share with ZLuC where the pictures
end up I think that would be okay by me. They may not know exactly where
the photos will end up but I assume institutional archives, maybe a
newsletter, etc but if they intend to put anything on really public facing
social media things (or a billboard) they should have to ask ZLuC for
permission and perhaps ZLuC can reach out to those in the photograph to see
if they approve and if they want their names included or something.

Hi hi,
I like the idea of the lanyard and stickers, this is something that we can
include in our communications to folks so they know what to expect and how
to prepare. Regarding the NYU photographer, I understand why they want to
document and am comfortable with being photographed. I like EmmaKarin's
idea of being clear about where those photos will end up and if/how they
will be used.
Thanks for your thoughtful consideration of this question.
Warmly,
Sharaya

Thanks, all. I really appreciate the thoughtful feedback and I'm
definitely happy to bring this all back to the NYU Libraries Communication
team that made the original inquiry. To share, the original message I
received was (and please note, I've clarified that the event will be on
Saturday/Sunday, not Friday!). As you'll see, they're flexible with where
they'd use the photos, based on what we decide. Thanks for everyone's
feedback so far, and please continue to use the thread to discuss!
Hi Lauren,
I hope you're doing well and staying cool this week!
I'm reaching out about the upcoming Zine (Un)Conference. Our wonderfully
talented Creative Marketing Associate, [name removed], started with us this
summer and has been helping us capture some events
https://www.instagram.com/p/C8nPy8rBZec/ happening in Bobst!
Would you like her to stop by on Friday, August 2nd to photograph any of
the events taking place that day? Depending on the agreement participants
have with photography being taken, we could either post these to our social
accounts / newsletters in a recap or just send the photos to you personally
after the fact to have as a record! :)

Absolutely agree about the thoughtfulness of your process, thanks for all

plans to use the photos they take.
Thanks for including us in this decision.

Hello! Also echoing everyone else, lanyards sound like a good idea but the most important is to know where the pictures end up, newsletters and basic social media sound alright. I think it's important to be very transparent at the very least.
