Thanks for asking! I think hybrid is really easy to ask for and really
challenging to pull off successfully, especially with an ad hoc, volunteer,
low/no-budget organizing team. As a member of the ZLuC 2024 accessibility
subcommittee, I would have concerns about whether a virtual option would be
truly accessible, given those limitations. I think it might be reasonable
to provide limited online options, for example, to arrange for one or
two pre-recorded sessions, or to record one or two sessions from ZLuC and
make them available online after the event.
As a co-organizer of ZLuC 2018, I encourage the ZLuC organizing team to be
realistic about their capacities. I've heard multiple past ZLuC organizers
say that organizing this event had contributed to their burnout. Likewise,
I encourage the zine librarian community to be thoughtful in our requests
of each other.
Thanks,
Violet

Violet!!! Thank you for that splash of reality!
We absolutely want to make ZLuC 2024 as accessible as possible, but we also
need to be realistic about our capacity.

including some sort of recorded sessions is great.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for adding me to this list, Jenna.
While I'm not on the planning committee, I wanted to chime in with a few
suggestions.
I agree with both Holly and Violet. Having planned and implemented online
programs (which had previously been in-person event), it takes much more
staffing and volunteer support to make them accessible and engaging. In
addition to recording one or two of the live ZLuC events, I suggest making
the handouts and/or activities available online, or other worksheets that
could further heighten the experience. I remember that we had success with
creating takeaway kits, and while that may not be feasible in this case,
perhaps we could make an "Experimenters' Corner" (or other catchy phrase)
to share out common household objects that could be repurposed, or other
readily available materials that one could get a discount or dollar store.
Best,
Mimosa
