Chuck0 (infoshop.org founder) and I were brainstorming alternatives to
"authority control" to get zine makers to make us not have to work so hard
to find basic cataloging info and came up with the phrase "mutual
metadata." Just thought I'd share because I know Milo at least will get a
kick out of it.
Chuck was also asking about DOIs for digitized zines based on a question he
got re: doing something useful with zinelibrary.info content. I figured
we'd have to talk about that at some point, though probably not yet? Maybe
Jennifer Hecker has something to say about DOIs and zines?

PS Chuck will probably join this list so hi, Chuck!

I totally love the phrase Mutual Metadata! Also, what's a DOI? I'm not
familiar with the TLA. ;)

DOI = Digital Object Identifier. http://www.doi.org/
We need some sort of unique identifiers (for titles and/or issues) to
enable most of the desired ZLUC functionality. DOIs make sense for
everything that's been scanned -- but what to do about zines that haven't
been digitized? In "regular" libraries (can we call them Shod Libraries?)
the OCLC number tends to do the trick. We need to have a URI convo.
Jenna, can you explain more about the "mutual metadata" idea? Do you mean
to have zinesters write up 'authority' resources about themselves, and all
of their name variants and zines and stuff? Or to have zinesters and zine
librarians catalog their zines? Or both?
Getting back to the URI discussion, I wonder if we might compel Zinesters
of the World to register ISNIs (achieving name authority control for the
ZLUC). http://www.isni.org/

P.S., I have some Big Ideas on Architecture. Next meeting?

To me "mutual metadata" is mostly a way of not saying "authority control"
to anti-authoritarians. :)
As you suggest, it also implies trusting a person as an authority on their
own identity.
All for Big Ideas on Architecture talk at our next meeting, and
ISNIfication.
I'm excited to see discussion happening on this list between meetings, too!
