Hi all, I've been approached by a student group that makes and studies games (their current game project is called "Liminal Library"!). They are hoping for space in the library (always a challenge), specifically a makerspace. We already have a 3d-printing-oriented makerspace on campus (unaffiliated with the library). I'm curious if any of you have makerspaces that are maybe less 3d-printing-oriented, and could tell me about them? What kinds of tools/materials/equipment do you have in your space? Is it open for anyone to come in or is there restricted access? Is it staffed? Any tips on getting this approved are welcome, too. Selfishly, I'm thinking this could be a great place to keep all my zine-making and collage-making materials. I've long wanted a Risograph and other printmaking resources. I think a challenge is that a printmaking studio would need to be contained (for noise) and staffed. I was bummed when our makerspace was created without any thought for supporting zine making. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But maybe, if you could tolerate it as your office you could be the primary person who staffs the space??? Hi, Julie: At UMKC, ZineLab is part of the Digital Collaboration Studio <https://library.umkc.edu/digital-collaboration-studio/>, which I oversee. We have a lot of analog equipment - bone folders, awls, etc., that students can check out to use in our space. We also have a variety of digitization equipment in our Retro Media Lab to generate collage materials, and design software on our lab computers. We soft launched this semester and we're working on getting funding for a printer which students will be able to use with their print allowance. The Studio was an existing lab space, and the ZineLab emerged organically from demand, primarily from faculty.
