I’ll also echo what Christine and Jessy said. Here in the archives at UMass Amherst we’ve increased instruction around zine assignments. Pre-pandemic, there were 0 and now we have 4 regular classes in History and Journalism with zine assignments that come to look at our zine collection. I believe it’s for all the reasons already articulated (off-screen, different kind of writing, more engaging than traditional paper, creative, etc.). I’m also finding undergraduates interested in zines for their connection to historic underground music/culture from the 80s-90s that is not represented online. It’s probably also tied to the resurgence of vinyl and all things 90s and seeing this stuff on Instagram. One of the undergrads who works in the archives buys vintage zines online and just went to a “punk tag sale” in Queens where an old punk he follows on Instagram was selling off their old ephemera (zines, flyers, etc.).
I am also involved with the Flywheel Zine Fest, held every year in Western Mass and the average number of exhibitors (30-35) has steadily increased over the 15 year history of the fest. I would also say that the subject matter of the zinesters who come to the fest is different than zines from 30 years ago (less music scene stuff / more comix/art, still personal and political zines).

It could also be persuasive to share that there are college courses that focus on zines, which shows an interest in zine culture (at least among late teens/early adults). Hi friends!
Besides being a librarian, I'm also a writer, and I'm currently putting together a pitch to write a book for teens about zines. I need some statistics or facts that might convince a marketing guy who's never heard of zines (or thinks of them as something from 1994) that they're still a vibrant, important resource that has relevance to young people.
So what might help me would be stats for things like: the number of zine libraries that exist, number of zine fests held in a recent year, attendance at the recent Zine Librarians UnConference just held in NYC this year, any stats from the ALA Zine Pavilion that would indicate interest or participation, number of people who signed up to table at a recent zine fest (I might be able to get this for the upcoming Portland Zine Fest), or whatever else you think might be helpful.

I'll mention the recent Brooklyn Museum exhibit “Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines.”
I'll also mention recent politics, from the feds down to local school boards, to get kids off of phones and screens - making zines in the classroom as an alternative activity that fosters self-esteem and self-empowerment.
I'll also mention that academic libraries now have zine collections, zine librarians etc.
I'd be super grateful for anything you could share, and it doesn't have to be super uptight accountant type statistics - I mostly need stuff that would show how vibrant the scene continues to be.

Besides being a librarian, I'm also a writer, and I'm currently putting together a pitch to write a book for teens about zines. I need some statistics or facts that might convince a marketing guy who's never heard of zines (or thinks of them as something from 1994) that they're still a vibrant, important resource that has relevance to young people.
So what might help me would be stats for things like: the number of zine libraries that exist, number of zine fests held in a recent year, attendance at the recent Zine Librarians UnConference just held in NYC this year, any stats from the ALA Zine Pavilion that would indicate interest or participation, number of people who signed up to table at a recent zine fest (I might be able to get this for the upcoming Portland Zine Fest), or whatever else you think might be helpful.

I'll mention the recent Brooklyn Museum exhibit “Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines.”
I'll also mention recent politics, from the feds down to local school boards, to get kids off of phones and screens - making zines in the classroom as an alternative activity that fosters self-esteem and self-empowerment.
I'll also mention that academic libraries now have zine collections, zine librarians etc.
I'd be super grateful for anything you could share, and it doesn't have to be super uptight accountant type statistics - I mostly need stuff that would show how vibrant the scene continues to be.
