[Zine Librarians] Gaming Zines?

JS

Dear Colleagues,

I'm writing to inquire if anyone can recommend individual zines and
zinesters or distros for zines about video games. I handle our zine
acquisitions, and I'm not encountering anything in our usual channels,
which are more focused on other topics. We have some technology zines, but
we've received so many requests from students and faculty specifically
about gaming (e.g., character development). Apart from telling folks, "Go
make your own?" or trying to interest them in our comix or analog games, do
you have any recommendations? Off-list responses are fine.

With all good wishes,

Jenny

Hey Jenny,

A good place to find gaming zine makers is the Zines feed on Bluesky.

We only have two at Barnard
https://clio.columbia.edu/catalog?commit=search&q=%22Game+zines.%22&search_field=subject
so far. (In the results, Em's predates game zines and doesn't follow the
same conventions)

Maybe also < site:itch.io game zines >. There is probably way more
expertise on this topic in the Zines & GLAM Discord.

I second Jenna's suggestion to look at itch.io. I can also make a post on
BlueSky and ask some video game-related people to boost it.

Here's a link to the Zines & GLAM Discord server
https://discord.gg/edXQUfk2JT if anyone would like to join.

There were definitely more video game zines in the '90s and some of the
gaming magazines back then actually had zine reviews.

(I recently saw an online "game" thing where someone made a fake video '90s
game zine https://itch.io/t/5882685/zine-library-find-super-r-u.)

I'll mention a recent one that I really liked:  Why is Forza Horizon 5
Misgendering Me????? by Beatrice Tollison
https://www.instagram.com/btollison.art/p/DApP0eORG7R/ I don't know if
Beatrice has a webstore, but you could try sending a message.

I have some Yakuza (and maybe Final Fantasy Tactics?) zines by Laurissa
Hughes https://laurissahughes.com/. I can't find them online,
unfortunately! I have more gaming zines around somewhere, but can't find
them right now.

I've also made a few zines about video games that you can download and
print if you want.

I should really get around to putting those up on my itch page...

Best,
Matthew

I missed that detail, too, and was wrong about the history of games zines!
Regardless, it's interesting to know more about these other zine genres.

Hey Jenny,

A good place to find gaming zine makers is the Zines feed on Bluesky.

We only have two at Barnardhttps://clio.columbia.edu/catalog?commit=search&q=%22Game+zines.%22&search_field=subject so far. (In the results, Em's predates game zines and doesn't follow the same conventions)

Maybe also < site:itch.iohttp://itch.io/ game zines >. There is probably way more expertise on this topic in the Zines & GLAM Discord.
