ZLUC updates
Dear Zine Union Catalog friends,
Lauren Kehoe, my grad school project partner and I are digging into zine
union catalog work again. Before we get too deep in this semester's
development, we'd love to check in with y'all and maybe revive regular
conference calls, so we're not building in some wonky direction you hate
and is antithetical to zine culture and library values. 😵
We recently posted our midterm
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/papers/zuc_midterm/, which was outlining the
project and sharing what some of priorities are for the semester. We'd love
y'all's feedback.
One of the things we're interested in exploring before we go much further
is accessibility. I don't remember if we've talked much about it in the
past, other than maybe recognizing that some colors are more accessible
than others for people with various visual abilities and preferences.

me, but I'd really like to see more input from more community libraries
and archives. Though that's true of most of ZineLib work in general. :D
RE: Regular conference calls... I'm down for that, but have a real hard
time doing them during 'regular business hours.'Â But moving from a
telephony sitch to one that's more text based might work for me.

Thanks for sharing your midterm paper with me. I think your midterm is amazing (because you have done a lot work on the ZUC), informative (because I didn’t know what was going on with this project) and insightful (because your internal thoughts are meshed with the external presentation).
Your goals: Roadmap, Governance, Record Templates and Accessibility seem doable. They all seem like first steps that need to happen.
I can commit to regular project calls, preferably Thursday or Friday. FYI- I am in the middle of an ILS migration and we will be doing this until January 2019. I’m part of a consortium, so this process is being managed by our consortium systems office, not me. I will be hitting a lull in this work soon, so this is good timing on your part.
As far as expertise. I have worked closely with students with blindness on research projects in my INFS1000: Research Skills and Information Literacy course. MCTC has a partnership or relationship with Vison Loss Resourceshttp://visionlossresources.org/programs/rehabilitation-center and librarians frequently have these students in our classrooms and in the library. I can tell you that database searching from an accessibility perspective is important. Some databases and library resources are GREAT, others are completely useless to people with blindness using assistive technology. I can bring my experiences to a project call. Also, my colleague John Daniels (website developer and systems guy at our library) is more knowledgeable than I am about developing websites with accessibility in mind. He can speak about many of the design features on our library websitehttp://library.minneapolis.edu/ that make it accessible. If you gave us some time to put something together, we could lead a discussion or present some ideas to the group.
I’m still waiting for spring in Minnesota and I think New York is also shrouded in winter, stay warm!
