Hi all,

The Zine Thesaurus Management Collective for the Anchor Archive Zine Library is thinking of developing a second thesaurus for genre/form terms, and we wanted to get a sense of how other people are defining and scoping genres for their zine cataloging work.
What do you currently use for genre/form terms (if anything)? Are there any vocabularies or other resources that you reference for this area of description? What might be some examples of genre/form terms that you use frequently or find particularly helpful?

Hi Indica,

At BPL, when originally cataloging, we mainly use LCGFT-Zines, obviously, but also any other genre terms that may apply-as well as a local heading (655 _4) Minicomics if it applies to the zine in question. If we're copy cataloging, other vocabularies (e.g. AAT, FAST) come as well, of course.

Since we use bibliocommons as our OPAC, you can get a sense of what terms are included in our collection by searching "genre:(Zines)https://bpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/search?custom_edit=false&query=genre%3A(Zines)&searchType=bl&suppress=true" and seeing what Form/Genre filter options come up.

The genres we use at Barnard are here: https://zines.barnard.edu/zine-genres.
That list is somewhat outdated.

I also have feelings about form vs content genres and rarely identify
something as a minicomic without also saying whether it's a personal zine,
literary zine, etc.

I'd love to be part of discussions about zine genre decisions made by the
thesaurus collective as I'd want the Barnard collection to adhere going
forward (and maybe a retrocon project???).
