Re: [Zine Librarians] ZineLibrarians Digest, Vol 47, Issue 1
Some of the international attendees at ZLuC 2024 brought up the great point that zine scholarship is largely US-centric and it can be difficult for international zinesters to enter/participate. I'd like to put forth their suggestion:
Year 1: virtual
Year 2: in-person, in the US
Year 3: virtual
Year 4: in-person, out of the US
I like the idea of alternating in-person and virtual conferences, and a regional gathering would also be great (perhaps each virtual year could have an optional regional component?), but I think it's important that we expand our focus to include the international zine community. Getting to meet zinesters from other countries and learn about their work was one of the highlights of ZLuC for me, and they deserve to be centered. :)

Thanks to everyone who was able to chime into the conversation about future
ZLuC planning. What do others think: would an every-other-year virtual/in
person schedule work? What about a three-year (in person/regional/virtual)
schedule? Other ideas?
Since there's no formal organization for zine librarians, we depend on
conversation on this email list to determine a consensus. Your input is
welcome and needed!

Hello zine friends,
If you weren't able to attend the Zine Librarians unConference (ZLuC)
earlier this month, you missed a great time! Check out the wiki site of
ZLuC 2024 https://www.zinelibraries.info/wiki/zluc-nyc-2024/ to see the
schedule of what we talked about and notes from some sessions. Today there
was a debrief meeting among attendees where we talked about
potential future plans, and we also talked about future plans during the
event.
The zine librarian community in the U.S. has now held sixteen (!!!) ZLuCs
https://www.zinelibraries.info/events/zine-librarian-unconferences/
since the first one in Seattle in 2009. Each ZLuC is hosted by a passionate
group of unpaid volunteers. ZLuC has traditionally been held once a year,
but we've had years with more than one ZLuCs as well (when Olympia hosted a
one-day ZLuC in 2019 the same weekend as the Olympia Zine Fest).
There's a lot of interest in having more online ZLuCs, and attendees at
this year's ZLuC thought perhaps every other year being entirely online
might be a good idea. That seems a reasonable bet for 2025, and there are
some volunteers who have stepped up to make that happen?if you'd like to
help shape that event, please reply all to this message!
The question now is what should we do for 2026? Should we gather another
selection committee and send out requests to zine librarians to submit
their library as a potential host? Do we want to prioritize having a
non-U.S. location? In that case, we might want to start planning sooner
than later, so passports and travel visas can be arranged.
Here's my own suggestion: What if we started a three-year cycle? That
might mean: the first year would be 100% online, the second year would be a
regional ZLuC year where multiple communities each host their own smaller
one-day events to build local community, and the third year would be the
"get everybody together in one place" big event.
By being on this list, you are a part of the zine librarian community.

I love this suggestion! US/Anglo North American Zine Librarianship is
definitely US & Canada centric.
I want to also acknowledge that we're not the only zine librarians in the
world hosting conferences, meaning other countries don't need US and other
English-speaking zine librarians to lead. It's more about listening and
learning. So those of us in the US in particular will have to figure out
how to partner and support other national hosts without throwing a lot of
work at them. (I'm not at all saying that's what Al is suggesting!)
I think regional events could be held during online years, and you don't *have
*to be in the region to attend. Having been a zine librarian for so long,
many of my dearest friends are in this group, and I want to see them more
often than every other year! I'm also a huge fan of scaling down.
