Greetings all,

I am new to zine librarianship and am working on starting a zine collection at our library. In addition to seeking funding for buying zines, I am trying to identify any sources for free or openly licensed digital zines.

Thank you in advance!

Greg

Hi Greg!

CrimethInc has many printable zines online: https://crimethinc.com/zines
and don't forget about the Internet Archive as a source.

Looking forward to hearing more about the collection; I'd love to feature
it on ZineLibraries.info once you're set up!

They might not be exciting for the general public, but my colleague Annie
Gaines and I have compiled some of the ones we’ve made for library staff
trainings, https://libraries.idaho.gov/publications/zines/.

Enjoy!

I also have link to digital collections:
https://zines.barnard.edu/zine-libraries#digital-libraries-6

I also want to raise something, and it's not at all meant to be critical of
Greg or anyone getting a new collection started and trying to think
creatively about how to stretch not only their budget, but also the range
of zines you're providing to your community. People who contributed their
zines to these various digital collections most likely want their zines to
be seen, read, and enjoyed beyond their own circles and aren't looking for
a payout.

However, one thing I want to draw folks attention to, who don't already
know about it, is the Zine Librarians Code of Ethics
https://www.zinelibraries.info/code-of-ethics/, which calls for paying
for zines whenever you can, especially if you're a library with a budget.
As someone whose boss said "sure" to my first budget request, I respect
that my experience might make me jaded to other people's realities. At the
same time, I think that part of our job, and part of why the Code of
Ethics
exists in the first place, is convincing our administrations to act
in accordance with zine community values.

Greg is probably doing that already! I just wanted to bring this up because
this thread makes me vaguely uncomfortable. I'm not the zine cops, and I
hope zine cops don't exist, and I really hope my concern doesn't make
anyone feel like their yum has been yucked!

With warmth and respect, Jenna
