And has there ever been a challenge to have a zine collection removed from a public library? It's a great question, thanks for asking! The only zine-related kerfuffle I can think of was at the Glasgow Women's Library in Scotland: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/jk-rowling-attacks-feminist-library-for-shaming-lesbians-md2cv3783; alternate news option if you're paywalled: https://www.gbnews.com/celebrity/jk-rowling-lashes-out-at-a-feminist-library-over-trans-zine-celebrating-the-death-of-lesbians. I don't think the library ever actually considered removing it. I suspect that because zines are considered a "nice to have" but not an integral part of the collection of public libraries, that we'll rarely hear about zine challenges. Either because it will silently get removed by fearful admins, or more likely, because of silent censorship, meaning that libraries won't collect them in the first place if they're worried about pushback. If librarians are reluctant to go to bat to protect traditionally published books, they're certainly not going to do so for a Xeroxed 12-page zine. I haven't had an external challenge, but I've had one or two from staff. I hope zine libraries don't come under attack, but it wouldn't surprise me, unfortunately. The collection at the Baltimore County/Stuckeyville PL (?) was dismantled. I believe they said they based the decision on circulation numbers.
