crummy NEH grant news :(

Hey folks,

UT Libraries has officially withdrawn our NEH grant application.
Apparently, our grants officer asked the NEH if we could amend the
application and they recommended we just pull it so that's what they did. I
wasn't privvy to the conversation, so I don't know how it was handled.

I am totally furious at my institution, but I am also confident that we
will carry on just fine without this particular grant and without this
particular collaborator. I, for one, have every intention of continuing to
work on this project on my own time, and see no reason for us to deviate
from our existing plan.

That said, I'd like to talk about this issue in a focused way on our next
call, especially as it relates to a) graduate student projects, since the
deadline for Spring Capstone project proposals is swiftly approaching, and
b) other parts of the project that need funding, if any.

Sorry about this whole mess,

Jennifer

That is suprema-ly messed up. Not to cause you more pain and rage, but to
sympathize, a lot of people outside UT put serious work into this,
including the scholars that wrote support letters. I feel sick about those
not getting used. Maybe we can repackage the whole thing next year from MIT
or UF or wherever. (I think Barnard won't even pretend to serve as a
sponsor, but I could be mistaken.)

Ugh, Jennifer. Do you want to be dean of the Barnard Library? We still
don't have one, and I would totally let you play with zines.

Yes, I totally agree, Jenna. I've been waking up in the middle of the night
angry about this situation for weeks and I really didn't think it would get
this bad. I tried to convey to my administration that this was a really bad
move. They could have just hung in there - a very low % of NEH grants even
get funded! - and then, if we did get the money, YAY GRANT, then figure it
out. Jeez.

Instead, this project will go ahead & be successful with out them and
they'll have a bad rap in the zine community. Not what I've been working
toward, but if that's the way they want it... The irony, of course, is that
in my new position they want me writing grants and building partnerships.
Suddenly, I don't feel as though I can recommend folks collaborate with UTL
or spend time working on a grant application with them. Trust broken :(

Again, I am really sorry about all of this, y'all. But, I do think we can
use what we put together for the NEH & move on parts we don't need money
for & find funding for the other stuff...

Looking for (or to create) a more sensible work environment,

Jennifer

Yeah, I'm mad on your behalf, Jen. UT is being a complete jackass in general, what with their restructuring and all, and how they've treated you is awful.
