Good afternoon,
I have on my desk to catalog, a Cartonera-basically a zine or short booklet bound in a cardboard cover. Would I catalog it as a zine? The person who donated it calls it a zine. I've never seen one, though it's a popular publishing movement in many countries.
I have no problem with describing it as a zine, but I want to ask the "collective wisdom", as I don't do many zines. BTW, we will be getting more of them.

For what it's worth, Cartonera bookshttps://lccn.loc.gov/gf2023026045 is a separate LCGFT term. So I would consider them cousins of zines, and not necessarily zines. It seems like the artwork is really important to these, so I'd echo the guidance about artists' books.

I have on my desk to catalog, a Cartonera-basically a zine or short booklet bound in a cardboard cover. Would I catalog it as a zine? The person who donated it calls it a zine. I've never seen one, though it's a popular publishing movement in many countries.
I have no problem with describing it as a zine, but I want to ask the "collective wisdom", as I don't do many zines. BTW, we will be getting more of them.

The University of Wisconsin has the largest collection, mostly in their
special collections:

and you'll see a link for Akademia Cartonera, an edited volume (open
access) about the format.
At Iowa, we split ours between Special Collections (if it's not yet in
another library's special collections or if the author has an affiliation
to our university) and circulating Stacks. The circulating cartonera are
protected by a mylar cover, but otherwise no other intervention. The
University of Wisconsin has the largest collection, mostly in their special
collections:

At Iowa, we split ours between Special Collections (if it's not yet in another library's special collections or if the author has an affiliation to our university) and circulating Stacks. The circulating cartonera are protected by a mylar cover, but otherwise no other intervention.
